Childbirth often causes stretching of the muscles in the vagina and pelvic floor. This resultant laxity worsens with age. The loss of vaginal tone and widening of the canal reduces the friction needed to enhance sexual satisfaction. Vaginal tightening is a procedure that approximates the muscles and trims extra mucosa to decrease the diameter and tighten the vagina.
The surgery may be performed under local anesthesia and sedation on an outpatient basis in our center or in the operating room if additional procedures for pelvic organ prolapse are also required. Most women experience functional improvements within 6-8 weeks after the procedure.
New innovative nonsurgical devices are now available to tighten the vagina with the use of lasers, ultrasound and/or radiofrequency. These technologies treat the vaginal tissue by stimulating collagen remodeling and new collagen formation in the vaginal mucosa leading to tightening of the vagina. Some patients have noted an enhanced sexual gratification and improvement in urinary incontinence without any down time.
